ART 348 Final Project: Twisted Fairytale Covers

The way I went about choosing my theme for the final project was simple really. I asked my roommate to give me five random fairytales and five random concepts. Then I put them into two separate cups and had her draw them out and that's how these silly mash ups happened. I got the inspiration from the Syfy show Faceoff, a movie monster makeup competition, where in the last episode they had to pick a fairytale and then a theme. The only ones that are the same from the show are Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, and Hansel and Gretel and the themes borrowed from the show were haunted and space, but none of the collaborations I made were collaborations in the show so I didn't copy anyone. Anyways . . . this was my first real time coloring on Photoshop and I have to say I think I did a pretty good job for my first serious attempt. Though it was long and tedious on some of them (Puss in Boots). I didn't get all the exploratory drawings in and half of it was because I was lazy and the other half was that I didn't need to draw anymore once I figured out how the concept was going to end up. Only one has 19 drawings so that's good I guess . . . (Hansel and Gretel)  Hope you enjoy!!! :D

ART 348 Project 7: Shakespeare Facemelter

This is my new and improved Juliet who is a reptile alien of Planet X in my Shakespeare concept. Unfortunately I couldn't get the original picture up, but the one you are seeing is just the same with some revisions done by my lovely professor.
And this is a quick sketch I did of Romeo before class and my professor seemed to like it way more than my Juliet one and as I look at it more I'm starting to like how creepy he looks. He's also suppose to be small compared to Juliet in the actual concept. I thought it would be fun to make the size difference huge.

ART 348 Project 7: Shakespeare Concept

I chose Romeo and Juliet as my Shakespeare play because it's the only one that I knew very well and it's also well known so a lot of other people can recognize it. My initial plan was to make the two from different planets, those planets being Mars and Venus, Romeo from Venus, Juliet from Mars. But I decided to make up my own two planets so that I could have free rein over what species of alien they were so the planets are Planet X and Planet Y for simplicity's sake. Juliet and Tybalt are suppose to be a sort of lizard creature that lives on a very dry planet. Romeo, Paris, and Mercucio are suppose to be fish frog alien types so they have to have a reverse scuba tank so that they can breath off their planet. I realized when I created them that all my characters look very similar. There isn't much variety so I plan on making them less humanoid and more alien like in the future. Also more diverse because my Romeo, Mercucio and Paris all sort of look exactly the same.

This is the scene where they first meet. Backgrounds and set designs are my weakness so they background looks awful but it's suppose to be an embassy space station where the two planet species can meet and intermingle.
The other scene I did was of the famous death scene which takes place on Juliet's dry barren planet. I didn't have enough time to draw in what the planet looked like but the point of this scene is that Romeo kills himself not with poison from a bottle but by ripping apart his water tank and dries up like a raisin. It's sort of like a poison to his species. Unfortunately I didn't get the third scene up but it was suppose to be the fight scene between Tybalt and Mercucio and it was suppose to take place on Romeo's planet.

ART 348 Project 5: Make it Better

This is suppose to be the battle scene to my concept. I honestly had no time to make it any more spectacular than it already was but I decided to block in the colors on photoshop. I might go back at some point and detail it out but so far this is a good start.

ART 348 Project 4: My Concept

I chose the concept of the Houchians and the Flatlanders that I'm doing with my roommate. So since this is a collaborative project now I had her draw out the character designs and the map. I drew the logos and the Houchian attacking the cougar. I was going to draw some set designs but I ran out of time and couldn't get them to look quite right so I didn't post them. If you can't remember the concept's main premise it's in my earlier blog called "5 concepts" and it's number four.

ART 348 Project 3: 5 Concepts

1. This is a story that I have running through my head almost everyday since who knows when. The concept is a story but I kind of want it to be a graphic novel but I haven't fully developed the characters yet. The story changes every time I think about it but the main premise is this:
There's a princess who runs away from her well guarded castle in defiance of her marriage arrangement from her father. She wanders out into the woods and get's snatched up by a band of thieves. The leader of these thieves happens to be cursed with a legendary werewolf beast inside of him. This curse allows him to heal himself, transform into a wolf, and on the full moons transform into a grueling bloodthirsty beast of the night. He keeps her in his custody until a large ransom is paid by her father who refuses to do so. Over the time he spends with her he must save her from peril from his own nemesis, the bandit king. In the process of saving her he turns into his werewolf form and almost kills her but quickly saves her with his own healing powers. Once this is done he develops feelings for her but must let her go . . . That's about the gist of my story so far. There's a lot of things in-between but that keeps getting changed to more a I think about it.

2. This a concept for maybe a video game or a graphic novel, either could work. It's sort of set in a world similar to Skyrim, the video game by Bethesda. The main premise is that all the men are going off to some sort of war to fight some sort of evil and they're all dying so it's up to the women to step it up and fight for their land and freedom. But there is no armor made for women so they are forced to use the reserves of armor specifically  made for men as well as their weapons . . . this was in response to the armor they seem to stereotype for women, example being the bikini armor and fuzzy bras and what not.

3. This is a design concept I've had in my head for a while. It's a machine that you use to record your dreams and play them back after you wake up so you can remember what you dreamed. I know that some dreams shouldn't be relived but some you want to remember with more clarity so this design seemed like a plausible idea for the future . . . maybe . . .

4. This is a collaborative concept with my roommate and best friend that we've been thinking about for a little while. It started when my band teacher in high school misspelled my roommate's hometown Hiouchi as Houchi so I started calling her and her family Houchis or Houchians. Then it dawned on us that it sounded like some sort of tribe or wild group because they lived out in the redwoods and she called my family the flatlanders because we lived in a town down by the harbor away from the hills and trees. The main premise is that the flatlanders are a large group of international traders since they have access to the harbor so they can import and export goods. The Houchians are the tribesmen of the hills and redwoods and they trade with the flatlanders to get tools and weapons by selling furs, woods, and minerals. Soon some of the flatlanders start to move up into the Houchian's territory and claim it as their own, thus starting a civil war between the two groups. There are a few other outer groups such as the "horse people" who are nomads in the grass areas and they breed cattle and horses. Another outer group is the Smithies who are a knowledgeable people and have a college established in their area. There's an inside group in the flatlanders who are like Druids with their healing salves and herbs. They live on the outskirts of the flatlands . . . this concept is fun because it pertains to our little county of Del Norte County up in the way north of California, bordering Oregon.

5. Unfortunately I didn't have a fifth concept. Sorry . . . couldn't think of one.

Yeah they aren't organized in a orderly fashion such as in photoshop or who the digram showed on the website but they were organized into groups as you can see. And yes this is a screen cap of my desktop. I was just too lazy to put them into a folder when I did it. But the 10 concepts will follow suit when they are finally scanned. This was an interesting project, especially finding 100 pictures to match my odd interests. My concepts I don't believe are the best ones but its only a start. It's suppose to help stimulate the thinking juices.

ART 348 Project 1: Shopping at the Grocery Store

So when I was young, my brother and I would go to the grocery store with our mom because we weren't aloud to be home alone. The only thing I looked forward to when going to the grocery store, or 'the store' as we called it when we were little since we didn't think there was more than one kind of store, was if my brother and I were well behaved through the whole shopping day, my mom would buy my brother and I these specific animal crackers. When I saw this assignment that was the one thing I knew that I could buy from a grocery store that would remind me of my childhood. It always seemed to be a Safeway, which is where I went, but I'm not sure if they have these specific animal crackers at any other grocery store. At first I couldn't find them, and then I found a big bag of them and was a little defeated until I looked some more and found the boxed ones with the little yarn strap to carry it and everything. This happened to be a limited addition one but normally they have a picture of random animals such as the polar bears and some gorillas, tigers, and lions all in circus looking cages, if you didn't know what they looked like. I was happy to have found them and they still taste exactly how I remember, delicious!

ART 348 Project 1: Place I've never been to: The Cemetery

It was hard for me to think of a place I'd never been to and go there in less then two days and write about it, but there was one thing that I thought of that I pass by but have never gone to and that is the cemetery. The only time I felt like I was in a cemetery was this little memorial site in my hometown with about 10 tombstones in the ground surrounding a flag pole. But I never thought of that as a cemetery. I've never been to big cemetery because all the relatives that I can remember dying were all cremated and burried at sea so I never had a reason to go to a cemetery. So I decided to go to the one here in Ashland and it is quite a morbid place. I feel as if I'm not aloud to speak loudly or I might upset the spirits or something. It was almost "dead" quite (haha) but seriously I felt a little uneasy since I've never really been to a cemetery before. But it was a good experience so now I won't feel all these feelings when I go to it again at some point (hopefully not for a long time though).

ART 348 Project 1: Ebay: Barbie dolls

Here is something I miss quite a lot that I loved as a child. Just your classic barbie doll, not the new barbie dolls they  have today. Those one's creep me out with their faces being morphed to fit a specific character. No, I'm talking about your classic blonde, blue-eyed, beautiful barbie with the classic barbie face. I had so many barbies when I was young that I had to put them in a big tub under my bed. I loved buying the pretty ones with the fancy dresses or the collectors edition barbies and then buying the Ken doll that went with the barbie doll. I didn't give up my barbies until I was in middle school and then sadly I sold all of them my freshmen year of high school. But this is one thing that I loved and then lost and sometimes wish I still had just to play with in my free alone time.
